Before the Feast

Did you ever stop to wonder
just how many turkeys lose
their fight to stay alive
in the days leading
up to Thanksgiving Day.

As you're sitting down to eat
with your family and your friends,
just remember there's a turkey
who has met its timely end.

Farmers raise them and sell them off
to markets, homes, and such;
they end up on our table
and we enjoy them much.

Along with mashed potatoes,
gravy, pies, cornbread and more,
we feast to celebrate the day
the pilgrims landed on this shore.

A turkey is just our way to celebrate
the freedom we have been given;
but what if the first meal had been a cow,
then there would be a lot of turkeys livin'.
