Where would our lives be without the internet?
Where would we be without Google, pointing all of us to the wonders of the world?
And all of the other wonderful sites like Yahoo, Facebook, MySpace, etc.
Once upon a time we had our own little world which was made up of our parents and they were the WHOLE world. Then along came a sibling or two, maybe three. This was the only world we knew and the only world we cared about. We also may have had aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents.
As we grew, that world expanded to teachers, bus drivers, and friends.
Then we discovered the internet and, suddenly, doors were opened all over the world. We could now meet and become friends with someone from the other side of the ocean or the world. Gone were the days when friends went outside in the yard and threw around a ball or went sledding down a snow-covered hill. Now it was more fun to "talk" online in Yahoo messenger or AIM, or whatever communication you chose to use. Different cultures were opened up to us. Anything we needed to know was one short click away. Books that you can hold in your hand got thrown aside, music is very quickly following suit.
In many ways, the Cyber world is wonderful and we wonder how we got along without it. In other ways, it has destroyed all the good things we remember as children; family game night, riding bicycles with friends, playing sports, curling up with a good book that you just can't put down until you've read it cover to cover.
Now, with Facebook, nobody has to call anyone on the phone anymore. They just send a message across cyberspace.
In one way, I think some people are more honest online because they can open up without the fear of face to face. In another way, I think some people are less honest because they can live in a fantasy world and be who they wish they were instead of who they really are.
With all that said, I find I depend too much on my computer as much as the next person. When my computer is not working or (EGADS!!) broken and out for repairs, I'm lost and don't quite know what to do with my free time. What did I do before I had a computer??????
I honestly don't know.
